Students & Residents

Bringing Physicians and Medical Learners Together…

Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry - Western University

Medical students and residents at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentristy have the opportunity to complete core and elective rural family medicine rotations at the Walkerton site. Rural medicine rotations expose learners and residents to the practice of rural family medicine and comprehensive care where the family physician typically works in multiple settings.

DISCOVERY WEEK

Annually, our Walkerton site participates in Schulich's Discovery Week, where 1st year medical students spend a week at SBGHC to experience living and practicing medicine in a rural community. The students are provided with the opportunity to shadow different doctors, observing obstetrics, emergency medicine, family practice, and surgical services. For more information, please visit Discovery Week - Distributed Education - Western University (uwo.ca)

Rural Ontario Medicine Program (ROMP)

Physicians at the Walkerton site are also preceptors within the ROMP program, accepting medical student and resident rotations from McMaster University, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) and International Medical Schools. International rotations must be coordinated through ROMP.

Annual Rural Medicine Retreat - Grey Bruce

The physician recruitment teams of the area have joined forces to help you experience some of our favourite parts of Grey and Bruce Counties from canoeing down the Saugeen river to enjoying the flavours of our local microbreweries.

This rotating event will explore different parts of our region each year with the goal of fully immersing you in the lifestyle and culture of our rural Ontario communities.

Above all, this retreat aims to provide physicians interested in rural medicine an opportunity to meet with potential colleagues, make connections, and find out more about the place we call home.

Medical Observerships

Undergraduate and medical students also have the opportunity to complete medical observership rotations with our Walkerton physicians. This is a hands-off experience that allows students to shadow physicians practicing rural medicine.
